Farnham fail to test relegated Beddington

By Farnham Herald in Cricket

FARNHAM, promoted to Division? One of the Surrey Championship, were well beaten by Beddington who dropped down from the ‘Premiership’ last season.

Visiting skipper Simon Lewis was persuaded by some mid-morning drizzle to insert Farnham at the Park and openers Joel Walker and Toby Davies, helped by a flurry of wides, began brightly with a stand of 32.

But the innings was to be a tale of batsmen getting in, and then getting out, with seven reaching double figures, but no-one reaching 30.

Beddington’s bowling tightened up considerably and Guy Hicks, the batsman most likely to build a major innings, played and missed regularly before falling to Ryan Cummins for 24.

Davies had already gone for 26 and Nathan Thorpe, after a partnership of 37 with Hicks, was caught for 17.

Farnham were 107-5 when Hicks departed and never really recovered. Parth Vyas and Seb Chmielinski took excellent diving catches, while overseas player Kyle Moolman picked up 2-22 from 10 very accurate overs.

Farnham were restricted to an inadequate 154-9 from their 50 overs.

Fawad Bajwa launched Beddington’s reply with five boundaries before being caught behind off Rob Goldsworthy, having scored 21 out of 27 runs.

Dave White, shaky at first, and Lewis punished anything loose and added 67 to effectively settle the outcome.

At 94-2, Moolman joined Lewis and a salvo of boundaries from both batsmen saw Beddington home in just the 28th over with eight wickets intact. Lewis finished 56 not out and hit 10 fours.
