Waverley's losing weekend

By Farnham Herald in Cricket

WAVERLEY Cricket Club played twice last weekend, and lost both matches.

On Saturday, Lynchmere beat Waverley by 61 runs. Lynchmere’s Richard Saulet and Tom Cain started cautiously against Sam Tempest and Jamie Harris and when the second wicket went down at 55 after 16 overs, it was honours even. The introduction of Adrian Day and Peter Brewer into the attack turned the game the visitors’ way and, at 89-7, a quick game looked certain.

Steve Cain and Tyler repaired the damage with a late partnership of 61 and then Cain and Murrell added another 28 to take the total to 178-8.

Waverley lost Jim Wright without scoring, but the pairing of Marcus Carmichael and Simon Brewer took the score to 100-4 and it was ‘game on’. However, a sudden batting collapse to Saulet and Peter Varnes saw the visitors score only 17 more runs. Unsuitable batting technique was their downfall.

On Sunday, Blackheath beat Waverley by 27 runs (40-overs game). The Stanley opening partnership put on 42 for Blackheath before Adrian Day claimed his first wicket. The score was 91 when Day struck again and it looked like a hard day at the office for Waverley. But then the tide turned and wickets fell regularly. Adam Carmichael and Peter Brewer reversed the run-rate and collected two wickets each. Will Knox also bagged two and Blackheath were dismissed for 160.

Chris Beanland was run out without facing and it was the shape of things to come for Waverley who slumped to 13-4 before Simon Brewer smashed 45 to give the score some respectability.

Young Olly Raderecht baffled the batsmen, taking four wickets, and only a wagging tail saved the visitors from a heavier defeat. Archie Freeth claimed 2-6 in only three overs.
