Church cafe celebrates its third anniversary

By Farnham Herald in Community News

THE Shepherds Rest Cafe in The Sands is celebrating three years since its opening this month, during which it has raised more than £8,000 for church funds.

The Shepherds Rest cafe is located at the Church of the Good Shepherd, The Sands, which is an area of outstanding beauty.

For walkers and ramblers, the cafe is only a few minutes from the North Downs Way footpath, while for cyclists it is only a two-minute ‘diversion’ from cycle route 22. For those using an OS map, the church can be found at grid reference SU 465882.

The church was built in 1875 for use not only as a place of worship but also as the village school. Build costs were £500 which was raised by public subscription.

The school was relocated in 1908 but the church has continued to act as a focal point in the life of the village and surrounding areas.

Now 142 years’ later this popular cafe opens every Tuesday from 12pm until 2.30pm, providing a wide ranging menu of homemade delights.

The cafe can seat up to 32 and has regular themed or special event lunches, the next being a ‘Bangers and Mash’ special on Sunday, July 11.

The profits from the cafe are shared between the parish and The Good Shepherd Church Fabric Fund. For group bookings or further information on the cafe, contact Ann Payne at or on 01252 782873.
