Councillor sparks car park review

EAST Hampshire District Council (EHDC) is to review Sunday charging at all car parks across the district.

The move following concerns raised in Alton by Lib Dem town councillor Pam Jones that all of the free Sunday parking in Alton is at the east end of town.

She said: “EHDC made a mistake with the old signage board at Mount Pleasant car park which was apparently corrected using an easily removable sticker. As a result everyone has assumed this car park was free on Sundays for at least three years (me included).” Some drivers had received parking fines she added.

She also asked why there was no free Sunday car parking for churchgoers at the west end of town like that provided for attendees at St Lawrence Church in the east,

An EHDC spokesman said: “We agree that it doesn’t seem right to charge for some car parks on a Sunday and not for others. Therefore, we will be reviewing Sunday charging at all car parks in the district, starting with Alton.”
