Hazardous asbestos has been dumped by the roadside near Alton, prompting anger and warnings over serious health risks.

In early April, fly-tippers left roofing materials, corrugated iron and asbestos just off Selborne Road by the A31 junction.

The incident follows the launch of a £500 reward scheme for information leading to successful fly-tipping prosecutions.

East Hampshire District Council neighbourhood quality portfolio holder Cllr Tony Costigan said: “Everyone knows that asbestos is a particularly dangerous material which can cause serious lung conditions if inhaled and needs to be disposed of safely.

"Whoever has done this clearly doesn't care about the danger it poses and has dumped this by the side of a road rather than arranging proper disposal. It's disgusting."

Alton Whitedown district councillor Ginny Boxall said: “Each fly-tip costs East Hampshire District Council thousands of pounds to clear up, money which has to be found when services are already under pressure.

“I do urge residents to check business credentials carefully and whether the carrier they use is licensed to safely dispose of any waste. I do hope the team investigating find whoever is responsible and that a successful prosecution follows. Fly-tipping is such a blight on our countryside.”

Alton Town county councillor Andrew Joy added: “Not only is this yet another criminal act for personal profit, it is a demonstration of contempt for the caring community in which we live.

“If anyone ever sees rubbish or spoil being tipped in an unusual or unofficial way, possibly under cover of darkness, in isolated places or from unmarked vehicles, I implore them to report this immediately.

“The cost of clearance is one thing, but the health of all of us is an even greater concern. These criminals must be caught.”

There were 945 fly-tipping incidents across the district between April and December 2025.
