A GUILDFORD man who pleaded guilty to burgling a house in Grayshott in broad daylight has been sentenced to three years and four months in prison.

Mark Leonard Chatfield, 41, of Epsom Road, West Clandon, appeared at Guildford Crown Court on May 31.

He was one of two men, who broke into the house in Headley Road at approximately 1pm on January 31. The second man involved is still being pursued.

A woman returning home heard noises at the side and saw two men run across the Headley Road into a nearby cul-de-sac.

CCTV cameras at a house nearby captured images of the vehicle used by the two men to escape and it was located the following day and Chatfield was detained nearby. Forensic evidence discovered in the vehicle connected it to the burglary.

Detective constable Richard Pegden, who led the investigation, said: “Chatfield was identified just metres from the scene of his crime, thanks to a prompt response by Surrey officers. The evidence, which was quickly obtained by the officers first on the scene, led to this prolific burglar pleading guilty to this burglary.

“I would also like to commend the homeowner for her quick actions, during what must have been a traumatic incident for her.”
