SURREY Police has continued its crackdown on drink-drivers with a swift arrest of the driver of a car which crashed in Chiddingfold (pictured).
The motorist, who was unhurt, was arrested and charged with drink-driving after police were called to the scene of the incident just after midnight last Friday.
Surrey Police Waverley Beat were called out the following day just after 8pm after a suspected drink-driver veered off the road into a lamppost opposite Squires Garden Centre in Milford.
He carried the lamppost on his bonnet for more than 60ft.
The driver fled the scene but was arrested at his home address. The collision sliced one door off his car, which had to be towed away, but he was unhurt.
Police posted dramatic photos of both incidents on social media to reinforce the message about the dangers of drink-driving.
During the course of the last major campaign, which ran from December 1 to January 1, officers made more than 600 vehicle stops, conducted 449 breath tests and administered 49 drug tests, resulting in a total of 154 arrests with 73 charges.
Chief Inspector Andy Gooch of the Surrey and Sussex Roads Policing Unit said: “It is bitterly disappointing to see so many people arrested on suspicion of drink or drug-driving in such a short period of time.
“The risks of such actions are well documented, yet despite our repeated warnings, there will always be a minority of people who make the conscious decision to get behind the wheel having consumed alcohol or drugs
“While the number of arrests is an increase on the previous two years, it is encouraging to receive reports of suspected drink or drug-driving from members of the public.
“Our officers can’t be everywhere all the time, and we appreciate the public’s assistance in helping us detect potential offenders. We take all reports of this nature extremely seriously.”
