HELP is on hand for elderly and vulnerable residents to stop them being targeted by fraudsters.

West Sussex Trading Standards are offering to install a call blocking device free of charge to help stop scam and nuisance calls.

To apply for a callblocker residents need to live in West Sussex, regularly receive scam and nuisance calls and have care needs due to age, mobility or mental health.

Relatives, carers or friends can also apply on behalf of West Sussex residents who meet the criteria.

David Barling, councillor for residents’ services, said: “Callblockers can help us to protect our most vulnerable residents from becoming victims of unscrupulous individuals.

“While the Telephone Preference Service can be useful, callblockers are proven to be the most effective way of preventing scam calls.”

Richard Sargeant, Trading Standards team manager, said: “These callblockers assist us in identifying and tackling rogue businesses who make thousands of pounds from ripping people off. We only have limited numbers of these callblockers so will have to prioritise our installations to those most vulnerable and at risk, but please do get in touch for advice and support.”

To apply for a call blocker contact Trading Standards online at www.westsussex.gov.uk/tsreport or call Citizens’ Advice on 03454 04 05 06, who will also be able to provide advice on scam and nuisance calls.

You can register for the Telephone Preference Service online at www. tpsonline.org.uk or by calling 0845 070 0707.
