THE trial of a man accused of murdering 41-year-old Glenn Hack at a homeless shelter in Farnham began this week.

Andrew Savage, 47, of no fixed abode, was charged with murder after the body of Mr Hack was found at Simmonds Court in Victoria Road on Sunday, July 12, 2015.

He appeared at Guildford Crown Court on Monday for the start of his trial.

Jurors heard the two men had been drinking together with two other men, Gareth Wheeler and Norman Sloan, from Friday, July 10 and may have fought prior to Mr Hack’s death.

Mr Savage does not dispute that he killed Mr Hack but denies murder, the court heard.

Mr Hack, who was described by his family as an “extremely talented man” but a “tormented soul” after his death, died from multiple injuries according to post-mortem results.

“No-one is ever prepared for hearing the sudden news of the death of a loved one – and it was no exception for us when we were told of Glenn’s passing,” said Mr Hack’s family in a statement issued last July.

“Although he had his faults and had to battle with some personal demons, deep down Glenn was a good and kind, but sometimes tortured soul. He was a free spirit, a bit of a wanderer with a character which would not allow him to live a regular nine to five life.

“He was an extremely talented man who, if he had put his mind to it, could have been anything he wanted to be. Glenn was a warm, kind and funny character who did not deserve what happened to him.

“He will be greatly missed by his loving family and we hope that people will respect his memory and our wishes to be left to grieve for him in peace.”

Jurors also heard Gareth Wheeler, 46, was arrested on July 12, 2015 in connection with Mr Hack’s death and has previously pleaded guilty to a charge of assisting an offender. The trial continues.
