THE BEECH Road Safety Working Party chairman has called for drivers to slow to 20mph in the village after a runner in Medstead Road was struck by a passing car, leaving the victim with multiple injuries.

The driver didn’t stop after the collision on Tuesday, March 24, added chairman Sir Charles Cockburn.

He said: “On another occasion last week a couple walking along Medstead Road encountered a 4x4 which drove straight towards them, though the couple were making frantic signals to alert the driver to their presence on the road.

“At the point they were about to throw themselves on to the bank. The driver finally took evasive action and then made rude gestures as she drove by.

“Over a period of only two days, we are really lucky we are not looking at multiple fatalities in Beech.

“Imagine living with that level of danger and the resulting fear all year round.

“Please slow down – 20mph is more than sufficient in the centre of Beech, as it is on Kings Hill – and leave plenty of room between you and the next vehicle.

“Remember, it might be your family member out walking, or your loved one who gets killed.“
