WAVERLEY’S police chief has hailed a seven per cent drop in burglaries in the borough in the financial year to-date - bucking the national trend.

Borough commander Inspector Mark Bridge made the announcement via the ‘Waverley Beat’ Facebook page in the first of what he hopes will be a quarterly newsletter updating residents on crime and policing in the area.

He said: “Nationally there has been an increase in certain types of crime including burglaries, cyber-crime and reports of domestic violence.

“While Waverley has a small decrease in burglaries, a seven per cent drop in the financial year to date which equates to 12 burglaries less over the previous year.

“I am pleased to say we have achieved some really good results.”

Insp Bridge added by targeting known criminals, officers have arrested and successfully prosecuted a “significant number” of people responsible for burglaries since April last year.

He continued: “Every victim of a burglary in Waverley will get a personal response from a neighbourhood officer and the necessary support, including house-to-house enquiries and crime prevention advice.

“I simply ask you to continue to be vigilant, to review your own security around your house and outbuildings.”
