A BURGLAR is behind bars this week after being sentenced to six months at Guildford Crown Court on July 8.

Daniel Lewis, 22, of Peakfield, Frensham, was arrested after breaking into a large detached house in Longdown Road, Lower Bourne, on June 15.

He had broken into the property and smashed a window, stealing a locket.

Police enquiries identified Lewis as the suspect and he was then spotted acting suspiciously by officers from the Waverley Safer Neighbourhood Team last Thursday.

When officers approached him, he made off on his bicycle, with a police officer pursuing him on foot over a considerable distance and giving location updates over his radio as he did so.

He was eventually detained and arrested outside The Fox pub house in Lower Bourne.

Waverley Neighbourhood Sergeant Matt Taylor said: “Officers from the Safer Neighbourhood Team responded quickly when they spotted Lewis, with one of them giving chase on foot over some distance and pinpointing where he was so we were able to stop him and arrest him.

“The local community should be extremely reassured by the speed with which this burglar was caught, put before the courts, sentenced and is now behind bars.

“This result demonstrates our commitment to tackling burglary within our local communities and sends a strong message to would-be burglars that we are determined to ensure that offenders are brought to justice.”
