VANDALS have struck again in Gostrey Meadow, kicking in the wooden railings on the bridge over the River Wey and tipping over the decorative bathtub planter on the corner of Longbridge and Union Road.

The damage was noticed on Monday morning and comes just weeks after the meadow was last targeted. On that occasion the wooden spindles were also kicked in, costing Waverley Borough Council more than £300 in repairs. The bridge was also damaged in May.

This week, however, the vandals also upturned the Union Jack bathtub planted by the town council for Farnham in Bloom at the entrance to the meadow, chipping the attractive tub’s white enamel.

The damage again prompted an indignant response on The Herald’s Facebook page, with one correspondent asking “what is wrong with people” and another dubbing the culprits “brainless morons”.

Others issued fresh calls for the council to improve security in the popular town centre park, querying “is it beyond possibility that WBC could put a CCTV camera up to catch the culprits and stop it happening in future” and “a brand new bridge built of sturdier material may be in order”.

A spokesman for Waverley Borough Council said: “Waverley has been working with Surrey Police to try and find a solution to stop the vandalism at Gostrey Meadow, being carried out by a small number of individuals who have no regard for this special community asset.

“The damage to the bridge was swiftly fixed yesterday (Tuesday, November 1) and the incident has been reported to Surrey Police.”
