POLICE have urged cyclists to take action following a spate of bicycle thefts locally.

According to the Waverley Safer Neighbourhood Team, a number of bicycles have been stolen in the borough over the last two weeks, with high value bikes particularly targeted.

Responding, officers have offered the following advice to keep bicycles safe:

• Store your bicycle indoors if possible, but if not then in a locked shed or garage.

• Use good quality fixings and a padlock to secure shed/garage doors and use anti-tamper screws in door hinges.

• Fit a mains or battery powered alarm to your shed or garage.

• If possible, secure your bike and any other valuable equipment to the shed or garage wall.

• Mark or tag your bike. Specialist bicycle stores are the best place to go to for information as to how to do this as they can tailor their advice to your specific bike/frame type etc.

• If you need to leave your bike outside, use a good quality lock, ideally hardened steel. D-locks are recommended, remove the saddle or front wheel and detach any lights or equipment.

• Take photos of your bike, including one of the serial number, and register it on www.immobilise.com.
