last week's Herald that Captain Peter Burden, the Waverley councillor holding the portfolio for the East Street redevelopment, urged councillors not to let Farnham be left behind Fleet, Farnborough, Aldershot and Camberley.

The character of Farnham is such that it cannot seriously be compared to the other Blackwater valley towns

mentioned. Anyone who knows Farnham would appreciate that what may be happening in those towns is irrelevant to what should happen in East Street.

Surrey County Council has also made the same mistake in their draft Spatial Srategy, "Shaping our Future", by including Farnham in the Blackwater Valley area, rather than in the South West Surrey area in which, for planning purposes, Farnham currently sits with Haslemere, Godalming and Cranleigh, towns with which Farnham has much more in common than Fleet, Aldershot and Camberley.

Farnham residents should, as recommended by Bill Tichener of the Farnham Society in last week's Herald, let Surrey County Council Planning and Development Department know their views on the latter proposal.
