THE speed limit on the A287 between Shottermill and Hindhead is to be reduced from 50mph to 40mph.
It follows concerns raised by Surrey County Council’s Local Committee in Waverley’s road safety working group regarding vehicle speeds and safety along A287 Hindhead Road.
Personal injury collisions have led to 13 ’slight’ injuries and one serious injury in the past five years.
At last Friday’s committee meeting, members agreed a recommendation to implement the reduction of the speed limit from 50mph to 40mph.
Members heard the majority of vehicles were keeping within the 40mph speed limit on that section of the A287 but approved the move to formalise the speed limit, because it would ‘increase the awareness of drivers less familiar to the road’ to the danger of travelling in excess of 40mph.
They agreed the change could also have a positive effect on driver behaviour and speed ‘for those drivers who have in the past been tempted to drive at or above the existing limit of 50mph’.
The proposal to make a Traffic Regulation Order to support the speed limit change has already been advertised to progress this financial year.
The order will now be made and signs could be done any day.
