THE A31 Hen and Chicken junction was the scene of another serious road accident in which one man was seriously injured last Wednesday.

The accident happened at around 7-10 pm, a matter of yards away from the location of a fatal road accident last September which claimed three lives.

A Mazda MX-3 was being driven from Alton towards Farnham by a 46-year-old man from Camberley, when it swerved to avoid tree debris in the carriageway.

The man lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree on the central reservation of the dual carriageway, knocking the tree over.

The car came to rest on its roof on the central reservation, with the driver sustaining serious injuries including a broken ankle, suspected broken ribs and facial injuries.

Meanwhile, the tree, which had fallen into the other carriageway, was hit by an oncoming Ford Escort causing damage to the front of the car. The driver, a 55-year old man from Winchester, was unhurt.

Both carriageways of the A31 were quickly closed and the driver of the Mazda was taken to Frimley Park Hospital.

County council officers were called to clear the carriageway of tree debris, and the road was fully reopened at 9-20 pm.

Due to a succession of road accidents at this particular location over the last six months, Hampshire County Council is currently in the process of conducting a feasibility study into the installation of crash barriers at this point of the A31, along with three other sites.

Installation of the barriers will take place in the next financial year, subject to the approval of the executive member for environment, Keith Estlin.

Local police are still appealing for witnesses to this latest crash, and anyone with information should contact WPc Leana Warwick at Whitehill Traffic Police on 0845 045 45 45.
