BETHEL Baptist Church in Upper Hale held an Ability Sunday service for the Special Educational Needs community earlier tin September.

The service, on September 11, was part of a nationwide initiative headed up by the Christian charity Prospects aiming to recognise the value of those with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and to organise a service which they could access and enjoy.

It was planned by Kath Hitchings, a member of the Bethel Baptist Church, who teaches art to students with moderate to severe SEN.

Makaton, a special sign language, and symbols were used and the whole structure was ordered and simplified to be sensitive to those with SEN and autism.

There were sensory activities including a paddling pool full of lavender, plenty of play dough and space for people to take time out if needed.

Lily, a therapy dog, and her owner Erica also joined the service and Lily received lots of cuddles.

Afterwards, Kath told The Herald: “The message was all about how God loves us and how we should also love each other.

“It was a lively, happy service where this valuable group in our community were free to be themselves.”
