RENEWED calls are being made for lower speed limits and more warning signs on the Hollywater and Walldown Roads following a major accident on Tuesday evening.

Residents say the current signs on the Hollywater Road are inadequate and the 60 mph speed limit is too high.

Hollywater resident Geraldine Wilson said she is anticipating a summer of accidents.

The latest accident at the Hollywater crossroads involved a Volvo and a Fiat Uno.

Both drivers were hurt, with the driver of the Volvo suffering back and neck injuries.

Eyewitnesses said the Volvo had overturned and a crane had to be used to right it.

The man driving the Fiat Uno was said to have lost a number of teeth and may have had other injuries.

Geraldine Wilson said the collision happened at about 8-30 pm and police were at the crash scene for more than three hours.

Two police cars blocked the road and two fire engines, and two ambulances attended.

She said it was the second major crash in two weeks and it was time something was done about the speed of drivers on the Hollywater and Walldown Roads.

"People go so fast. We want the speed limit lowered, even though we understand that people will break the speed limit."

She said the warning signs before the junction on the Hollywater Road were not in the right place.

"We also want the caution sign on the Hollywater Road before the bend. People are still roaring round that corner despite the crossroads being there.

"Every summer when it's still light and there are no headlights to indicate someone is coming along, we have a spate of accidents and this has been going on year after year."
