LARGE numbers of cars continue to travel in the wrong direction down the one way system in Dogflud Way.

It follows previous reports by the Herald in August, when business owner Barbara Milne brought the issue forward over concerns for safety.

Her frustration comes as it appears nothing further has been done to resolve the issue, with Surrey County Council’s (SCC) highways team believing the signage to be adequate following a review.

Barbara and her husband run a business overlooking the one-way system and “witness drivers making what could be a fatal error at least bi-weekly, and sometimes on a daily basis”.

Barbara said: “I fundamentally cannot accept that the signage is adequate, given the regularity of this occurrence.

“I am concerned that with increasing roadworks, the situation may become worse.

“This is an accident waiting to happen and a real threat to the safety of Farnham residents.

“It is frankly astonishing that I haven’t yet witnessed an accident.”

Police have told Barbara that they “would be happy to prosecute”, but she feels this “rather defeats the object of prevention”.

Waverley borough councillor John Williamson has himself witnessed this issue first hand, and said: “I have driven down East Street myself (in the right direction) to be faced with a confused driver travelling in the opposite direction.

“Fortunately it wasn’t busy and I got out of my car and explained to him that he was going in the wrong direction in a one way system.”

Barbara will be submitting a public question at the next SCC Waverley local committee meeting on March 9 regarding the issue, to which she will receive a written answer.

This local committee is responsible for highway improvement within the borough.

Farnham town councillor David Beaman added: “This is clearly an accident waiting to happen with all potential consequences that might have for human life.”

A spokesperson for SCC said “enforcing the one-way system would be a matter for the police”.

Police community support officer for Farnham, John Francis, said: “We take road safety very seriously and I’m very happy to meet with the business owner to listen to her concerns.

“If we see motorists driving inappropriately along Dogflud Way and ignoring the one-way signs we will take appropriate action.

“Equally if anyone has photographic evidence of motorists driving the wrong way along this stretch of road please let us know so we can contact the drivers concerned.”
