A NEW sign and road marking will be installed in April/May at Dogflud Way to help prevent motorists mistakenly driving the wrong way down the one-way system.
It comes after the issue was raised at the Surrey County Council (SCC) Waverley Area Local Committee meeting on Friday, March 9.
Barbara Milne and her husband run a business overlooking the one-way system and previously told the Herald that they’ve witnessed drivers making this mistake on countless occasions.
Barbara believes that these cars exit from the loop behind the East Street development site at Hoops Velo and drive over the hatched lines, as if going straight on towards Farnham Leisure Centre.
Her question was put forward at the meeting and read: "Could you please advise what action can be taken before there is a serious accident that could easily result in a fatality or life changing injuries?"
In response to Barbara’s question, the area highways manager (South West) wrote: "An analysis of the collision data for this location shows that there are no recorded injury accidents on file involving vehicles travelling in the wrong direction along Dogflud Way, which does not indicate a particular safety problem currently exists in terms of a history of poor road safety."
The existing signs were checked by SCC highway engineers and Surrey Police road safety officers, and were found to be "correct as per the current guidance contained within the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016".
This follows a previous review of the signage, which was believed to be adequate.
But, the area highways manager continued: "Signage is present in St Cross Road and East Street to advise drivers to turn left as they approach the junction with East Street, however, the officers did identify an additional sign and road marking that may help to further highlight the one-way system."
It was also highlighted that a potential long term solution could come from the development of Brightwells and The Woolmead, which would change the layout of this junction.
Farnham Town Councillor, David Beaman, said: "Hopefully the additional sign and road marking will prevent any further incidents of motorists driving the wrong way on Dogflud Way."
In response to her question, Barbara said: "I am delighted that the issue is now being taken seriously and that the Area Highways Authority recognise the potential for an incident on Dogflud Way, and that increased signage will be added to mitigate this risk to pedestrians and drivers alike.
"I am also delighted with the support provided by David Beaman of the local council, in explaining how to raise such a question and support with the process."
