Aldershot & Farnham continued their great revival with a third win in a row, this time against a side they have never beaten before in a league game – local rivals Fleet.
Earlier in the season, Fleet had beaten A&F 4-2, but this time it was Aldershot who ran out worthy victors.
However, title-chasing Fleet made the brighter start. Ex-Kenyan international Matt de Souza ran clear, but 'keeper Rob Boston slowed the forward down and when he did shoot Dave Jervis was able to scramble the ball off the line.
Then Aldershot scored from a broken down penalty corner. Graham Charlesworth's shot was well saved, but skilful play from Graeme Matthews regained possession and he slipped the ball home from an acute angle.
Fleet quickly equalised with a powerful shot from the top of the 'D', but Farnham were to dominate the second half. Short passes and support play, features not evident earlier in the season, contributed to a number of flowing moves.
Excellent work from Steve Farrer, Matthews and Simon Slater presented Paul Hales with an opening and he gleefully swept the ball home.
Again Fleet replied, albeit from a rare attack, when a sweetly hit ball into the 'D' was expertly deflected in by de Souza.
Prior to Christmas, A&F might have folded, but they are made of stronger stuff now and continued to play attacking hockey.
It came as no surprise when, from yet another penalty corner, Charlesworth's shot was blocked, only for Mark Ison to score with a powerful drag flick.
With just a minute to go, a long ball exposed the Fleet defence and after a neat exchange with Charlesworth, Hales slotted in the fourth goal.
The A&F defence of Chris Jones, Aaron Abbott, David Jenkins and Mark Bouelle were solid and enjoyed a relatively quiet time in the second half.
This Saturday, Aldershot & Farnham hope to avenge an earlier 7-0 drubbing when they entertain another title-chasing team, Wimborne.
A&F: Boston, Jones, Jervis, Bouelle, Abbott, Charlesworth, Farrer, Matthews, Slater, Hales, Ison.
