MOTORISTS will be kept up to date with the latest traffic conditions in Hindhead after the Highways Agency recently installed portable message signs near Thursley and Liphook. The signs aim to give drivers real-time journey information about the A3 and A287 crossroads in Hindhead, while construction work on the £371m tunnel project continues. Drivers will benefit from knowing how long it will take to get to the crossroads, and regular users of the A3 will have better information to help them plan their journeys. Paul Arnold, project manager for the A3 Hindhead scheme, said: "The variable message signs will give drivers, on the A3 at Hindhead, better information about traffic conditions through our roadworks and at the Hindhead traffic lights. "The regular driver will be able to make more informed decisions about the route and time of their journeys." The Highways Agency has collected data showing, for much of the time, drivers are better advised to stay on the A3 rather than to divert around country lanes. When finished, the A3 Hindhead tunnel will complete the dual carriageway link between London and Portsmouth and remove a major source of congestion, particularly around the A3 and A287 crossroads at Hindhead. The new road will be four miles long and includes twin-bored tunnels under the Devil's Punch Bowl Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The tunnel is expected to open in 2011.
