NINE Air Cadets at 229 (Farnham) Squadron have been awarded their Blue Wings, setting them on their way to becoming qualified pilots.

In order to achieve their wings the cadets had to first attend a presentation by a Surrey Wing Aerospace officer. Following this they spent a morning where they learnt basic skills in a simulator.

Finally they were then flown in an RAF Grob Tutor Basic Trainer aircraft by RAF pilots where they were also able to take control and practice their skills in flight.

The wings were presented in a ceremony on Tuesday, May 23, during which the squadron also celebrated Flight Sergeant Katie Smith’s graduation from a Qualified Aerospace Instructor Course (QAIC).

This was a nationwide course held over a number of weekends in Wiltshire. Katie was awarded most improved student on the course, and on her return to Farnham was presented with the Goodwin Trophy by warrant officer Keith Collier.

Flying officer Nick Filler said: “This is a huge achievement and all in the squadron are very proud of her.”
