TAXPAYERS in Waverley could be forced to pay a share a £300m fine from the European Commission unless an urgent solution is found to Farnham's growing air pollution problem. The EU has launched legal proceedings against the UK for failing to deal with air pollution, commenting that levels of nitrogen dioxide are "excessive" in many British towns. And on Tuesday, Waverley councillors were told the Government may use the Localism Act to pass any subsequent fines on to local authorities found to be in breach of EU objectives.
