BRENTFORD 3,

ALDERSHOT TN 0

A COMPREHENSIVE defeat for Aldershot may have provided plenty of entertainment for the crowd on Tuesday night, but that was no consolation to Gary Waddock.

The Shots boss said he was sick of hearing his team called a "good football side" and wants his players to start getting results after a run of two draws and two consecutive away defeats.

"I know I'm repeating myself, but it seems that we start well, then concede a goal and crumble," said Waddock who was banished to the stand at Griffin Park during the second half. "We need to be mentally stronger, and you can't coach that."

Brentford, who had lost 2-0 at Macclesfield on Saturday, got the win that kept the pressure on Wycombe. The leaders were held 0-0 by improving Macclesfield on Tuesday.

The Bees had to withstand early pressure from Aldershot who almost took the lead when Rob Elvins, sent clear by Kirk Hudson, saw his strong shot blocked by keeper Ben Hamer's leg.

Brentford, always formidable opponents on home turf, responded with very narrow misses by Jordon Rhodes – on loan from Ipswich – and Marcus Bean.

And it was the home side who made the breakthrough on 28 minutes, albeit with a controversial goal.

Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz had rushed out to save at Rhodes' feet on the edge of the area. The ball broke to Scott Davies, but his weak clearance was intercepted by Bean who slotted home under the advancing Ruiz. The goal was only allowed by referee Pat Miller after he had consulted his linesman, who had his flag up well in advance of the ball entering the net.

The goal knocked Aldershot out of their attacking momentum and they repeatedly squandered possession.

Hudson saw a 20-yard shot just clear the bar, but things went pear-shaped for the Shots in the last seven minutes of the half, with two penalties being awarded against them.

Chris Blackburn was adjudged to have hauled down Charlie MacDonald, but spot-kick specialist Ruiz did his stuff with a low save to his left to deny MacDonald.

Almost immediately, MacDonald almost made amends with a cracking shot that struck the crossbar.

And it seemed that the gods were favouring MacDonald. Ruiz allowed himself to be robbed by the striker who crossed to Rhodes and the resulting shot struck Anthony Charles' arm.

Again, the referee pointed to the spot and this time MacDonald directed his kick hard and true into the corner.

There was still time for the persistent Hudson to force another excellent save from Hamer, but Aldershot had it all to do in the second half.

Again, they started like they meant business. John Grant saw a well-struck shot touched over by Hamer and substitute Louie Soares made an instant impact as the Shots began to see much more of the ball.

Ryan Dickson made a vital tackle on the midfielder inside the area. Then Soares shook off Dickson after being sent clear by Danny Hylton, but after a pacy run, his final shot glided wide of the far post.

Waddock was dispatched to the stand after an intervention by the fourth official and could only watch as Brentford came back strongly, bringing two fine saves from Ruiz.

However, with three minutes left, Ruiz was left helpless as Rhodes collected a MacDonald pass and picked his spot from eight yards.
