Tom Mendum of Haslemere Border AC won the popular Alice Holt 10k run on Sunday.
Entries were up by 12 per cent for this year's event, organised by Farnham Runners, with 337 athletes taking on the challenging, hilly course.
There was a strong local contingent, including a large group of young Army runners from RLC25 TRG SP. The race attracted a wide age range, from youngsters of 17 to a veteran of 73.
Ideal conditions should have led to fast times. However, between the marking out of the course and the start, someone unconnected with the race saw fit to move the tape. As a result, runners followed a route over half a kilometre short of the measured distance.
Although this may have been good for tired legs, it meant that experienced runners were unable to compare their times with other races.
Tom Mendum won the race in a superb time of 32 mins 47 secs. He sat on the shoulder of Farnham Runners' Andy Green for the first five kilometres, and when Green took on water at the drinks station, Mendum made a break and pulled clear of the leading bunch.
Wells City Harrier Jon James took an excellent second position in 33-15.
Despite a nasty fall at the start, veteran Ian Ford from Overton Harriers picked himself up to place third for the second year running (33-39).
Andy Green was delighted with his fourth place (33-41), which earned the prize as first veteran. And Farnham's Terry Steadman won the super veteran's award for the first man over 50 (39-15).
The host club again took the team honours, with Richard Ferris, Stuart Morgan and Steve Murphy providing a solid back-up to Green's lead.
Emma Dearsley of Aldershot, Farnham & District AC was a convincing winner of the ladies' race by over four seconds (39-04). Windle Valley Runner Wendy Davies was a strong second (39-46).
Farnham Runners' Jane Georghiou recorded 39-56 for third place, while club-mate Fiona Long took the first veteran trophy as fourth lady (40-31). Toni Mcqueen from Reading Road Runners (46-55) was the ladies' super-veteran winner.
Maureen Bartels made a welcome return visit from Hamburg to clinch the first team prize for Farnham Runners (5th in 41-40).
Haslemere Border's Julie Macintosh, in training for the New York Marathon, recorded 49-52. Michelle McCann and Aneeta Gupta ran together for a time of 64-00mins.
Dave Bateman and Bob Monteath were the two other Border runners, coming 38th (39-21) and 76th (42-27) respectively.
The Mayor of Farnham, Victor Duckett, started the race and presented the prizes.
Runners were asked this year to raise money for RNIB and profit from the race is to be donated to the local charity, the Hedgehogs, whose members acted as marshals.
