Even when it is raining pupils at Woodlea Primary School, Bordon, and the volunteers who accompany them don't mind hoping on to their new 'walking bus', which has been running for several weeks and is serving as a keep fit routine and a green initiative as it reduces car journeys to the school.
The fun way of getting to lessons, which has been organised by teacher Antje Schwenke, operates on Tuesdays and Fridays and serves the Woodlea catchment area.
Some 10 children aged from four to 10 walk with parents or volunteers from home to school and more are signing up for the idea as it catches on.
Walking buses are growing in popularity, not only because they help to keep cars off the road but reduce parking – and with it increased accident potential around school gates – and help pupils and adultsto get fit and stay fit.
