OLD Thorns Hotel once again hosted the Peter Alliss Masters Golf Tournament, which raised enough money to pay for 10 bespoke wheelchairs which have been given to children with limited mobility to improve their quality of life.
The tournament itself, which was attended by more than 100 people from various clubs, raised in excess of £10,000. The charity’s forecast is for 50 powered-wheelchairs to be provided nationwide in 2017 thanks to a total sum of £150,000, making it the third-best year since records began.
The wheelchairs were handed over by BBC golf commentator Peter Alliss to Elyssa (11) sponsored by the British Turkey Federation (BFT), Harry (14) by BFT, Jade (19) by Surrey Golf, Lois (4), by St George’s Hill Golf Club, Louis (16) by Cooden Beach Golf Club, while Summer Dye (13) was sponsored by Maranello supercar dealership, Egham.
Anabelle (9) received hers from money raised at Oake Manor Golf Club, and Farnham Lions provided 15-year-old Phoebe}s (15) while 13-year-old Jessica’s came from Ferndown GC.
Georgia (17), who was unable to attend, had her chair provided by BFT,
In addition, Hindhead Golf Club presented a cheque for £11,130, while Geoff Geal and Carl Taylor from Farnham Lions handed more than £10,000 (below), which was raised during a golf tournament to celebrate their 50th anniversary earlier this year.
Peter, who lives in Hindhead said: “It is always a great day raising money and made worth while by being able to present these powered wheelchairs, which makes me very proud.
“It’s wonderful to see how they enable children to get about on their own.
“Every penny we raise goes towards providing chairs to children who need them.
“I would, however, love to have more clubs supporting and taking part in next year’s Alliss Masters.”
Between 1975 and 2006, more than £6million was raised by clubs and other organisations to buy powered wheelchairs for children across the UK and Ireland.
In 2006, the Peter Alliss Masters’ wheelchair crusade gained charitable status and implemented a new scheme through which clubs now buy their powered chairs for donation.
Since 2006 that generosity has amounte to more than £1.5 million in dontaions with the total number of chairs now standing in excess of 470. The group is run entirely by volunteers, and expenses remain less than 0.5 per cent of donations.
