SURREY County Council’s Waverley Local Committee has agreed to assess the problems caused by a blind bend in Farnham, after receiving a petition signed by 35 concerned residents.

Committee members agreed to take action at their meeting at The Bury’s council offices in Godalming after hearing the call for double yellow lines or traffic calming at the junction of Alma Way and Alma Lane in Upper Hale.

The petition, submitted by an Elm Crescent resident named only in council papers as ‘Janet’, stated: “It is very dangerous as cars have to drive on the right side of the road when they are coming into Alma Way from Alma Lane and cannot see what is coming towards them.”

Members were told there was “great strength of feeling” concerning the dangers and it was “an accident waiting to happen” following many near misses.

Farnham North county councillor Stephen Spence said: “I can confirm there has been concern about this for some time. It is a very dangerous bend if you have to drive on the wrong side of the ride due to parked cars.”

The committee agreed that Surrey County Council’s parking team would assess the request as part of the 2018 Waverley Parking Review, taking place over September and October and come back to the committee in December 2018.

Surrey’s area highways manager Frank Apicella said: “The assessment will allow for all highway and traffic related issues to be taken into account, before determining how to proceed with regards to any potential new parking restrictions.

“The annual review process ensures that all requests and proposals are considered at the same time, which is the most time and cost efficient way of assessing and introducing parking restrictions in Waverley, and across Surrey.”
