ALRESFORD Golf Club was ravaged by fire in the early hours of Tuesday causing extensive damage to a large section of the clubhouse roof.

The fire started in a corridor separating the kitchen area and the bar area.

The fire is thought to be the result of an electrical fault in the wiring of the building, though investigators have not yet confirmed the cause.

The alarm was raised at 2-49 am, after fire burnt through wires and set off the alarm system. Robert and Sheena Burns, caterers who live on the site, were awoken by the alarms and investigated. They called the emergency services at 2-56 am, and appliances from Alresford, Alton, Winchester and Eastleigh attended.

One jet, two hose reels and four sets of breathing apparatus were used, and the fire was extinguished by 4-48 am.

The fire destroyed the roof over the kitchen and bar areas of the building, and electricity and water services were also affected. It is not yet known how much the damage will cost to repair.

Club secretary Tony Adams said: "It is lucky that Robert and Sheena's flat is separated by a fire wall, otherwise it could have been a different story. We've got a big clean up ahead of us, especially as we are hosting a competition with 120 entrants on Sunday.

"The roof will take some time to repair, but hopefully, we will be able to function normally while we wait".
