Alton and Medstead tennis club members competed in a quiz to sponsor their coach Will May-Miller’s fundraising Channel swim for the Mlambe Project in Malawi.

The clubs enjoy regular fierce on-court competition but on April 21 they joined forces to support the Mlambe Project, which works with non-governmental organisations in Malawi to build schools for children in remote communities.

Will coaches at both clubs and he and his family are closely involved in backing the project.

The organisers of the joint quiz were Ailsa Jacob, Julie Wright, Phil Warner and Helen Mullenger, with James Wright the quiz master.

Beech Village Hall was packed out with teams from both clubs, hungry, thirsty and ready to answer questions. The team in the Bark ’n’ Render food van served up delicious burgers.

Andrew May-Miller gave a moving talk about the mission and work of the charity, while Will gave a fascinating insight into the training and preparation needed to swim the Channel, which is 21 miles wide at its narrowest point.

As well as intense swimming and endurance training, Will’s preparation has included cold water swimming, learning to swim against waves and currents, and knowing how to feed himself while swimming in open water. He said a “strong mind” was equally as important as preparing his body for the challenge.

Spokesperson Alison Smallwood said: “Proceeds from quiz night tickets, additional auctions and donations on the night contributed to a magnificent total of more than £2,350 raised for the Mlambe Project.

“And in case you’re wondering, team Quiz Truss from Alton Tennis Club were the quiz winners. Congratulations to Stephen, Vicky, Richard and Helena.”

Will’s swim will take place on June 23. His JustGiving page is at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/williammaymiller
