ALTON centenarian Bob Weighton will cut the ribbon in the Public Gardens to launch the Greening Alton and Holybourne Campaign on Saturday. The campaign aims to galvanise residents to fight climate change. Householders will be encouraged to take on five out of 10 energy-saving challenges, which to cut their carbon footprint and save money. Bob Weighton will join people of all ages in walking a mile to the Public Gardens on Saturday to take part in the launch. He will be cutting the ribbon at 1pm accompanied by the youngest Greening campaigner in the park. Pictured in training for his first Greening challenge, Mr Weighton told The Herald: "It's good to know that we can each of us do our bit to save energy by simple things like walking short journeys rather than taking the car. "I remember when there were no cars – maybe by the time these kids are as old as I am now there'll be fewer and we'll all be walking more again." Campaigners aim to get residents walking 100 miles on the day – a mile for every year of Bob's life – with each walker covering just one mile. As well as walks there are cycle rides, bands, a film, exhibitions, information about energy saving, discussions and much, much more.
