‘SIGNIFICANT’ roadworks are set to delay motorists in and around Alton over the next few months, county councillor Andrew Joy has warned.

Lane closures will be in place on the A31 and further road closures are anticipated in Anstey Road – where problems have been caused by motorists ignoring signage.

Cllr Joy said: “Drainage and inspection work has been under way for several weeks on the A31 bypass requiring overnight lane closures and we are now moving into a central reservation phase which will involve full road closures between 8pm and 6am.

“All are fully signed with diversions planned.

“When that is completed, the dual carriageway between Holybourne and the A32 Chawton roundabout will be fully resurfaced, again in phases to minimise what will still be some degree of inconvenience.

“Some of this work will extend into June but the road surface improvements will last for many years.

“The Anstey Road/Anstey Junction works are continuing with further utility excavations nearing conclusion.

“Some of these are requiring full road closure, again with full road signage warnings.

“Unfortunately some drivers continue to ignore the signage and hope for the best.

“HGV drivers in particular face challenging consequences with no choice but to reverse a considerable distance with other vehicles backed up behind them.”
