Alton manager Dave Hawtin is not normally short of words, but he confessed he didn't know what to say to his players when they came in at half-time seven goals to the good on Saturday..

"What I finally did say was not to hold back but to keep the goals coming, because they had the chance to reach double figures and might not have that chance again in their careers at senior level," said Hawtin.

Alton obviously took his words on board because the result was a sensational 15-2 victory over Brading in the Hampshire Senior Cup.

"I've never seen anything like it in all my years in football," said Hawtin. "Brading are halfway up their league, but they were awful at the back. Having said that, our finishing was clinical and great to watch."

It could well be a club and competition record win – Alton are digging into the files – and should be a huge boost to their confidence as they continue to adapt to life in the Jewson Wessex League.

The awful weather may have played a part in Brading's capitulation, but there was no real explanation for the humiliation of the Hampshire Premier League side, other than Alton were at the peak of their form.

Seven down at the interval, Brading came out to score a well-taken goal, but this only had the effect of annoying Alton who had wanted to keep a clean sheet.

They ruthlessly set about dismembering the visitors again and found the target eight more times before Brading scored a late second consolation goal.

Despite the freak scoreline, Brading never gave up and some brave goalkeeping spared them the trauma of a 20-plus goal defeat before their long trip back to the Isle of Wight.

Their cause was not helped when a defender was sent off for handling a goalbound shot from Richard Mealey.

Dave Bridger, the former Wrecclesham and Farnham striker, now in Alton colours, led the spree with five goals, closely followed by Ian Dyer with four. Alton's other scorers were Lewis Field (2), Brian Wood (2), Steve Larvan and John Edwards (pen).

A plumb draw with Aldershot in the next round eluded Alton. Instead, they have to visit Andover.

Alton carried their fine form into the league on Tuesday, winning 2-1 at AFC Newbury. Two goals from John Edwards secured the points at the impressive Farraday Road ground.

After falling behind in the 10th minute, Alton forced the home side back, winning a number of corners.

Ian Dyer, after a great run, was denied by a fine blocking save, but Edwards was there in support and threaded the ball between two defenders on the line for the equaliser.

The winner followed on the half-hour. Good work by Lewis Field set up the chance and Edwards rounded the goalkeeper before finishing with his trusty left foot.
