SOUTH West Trains is pouring £210m into upgrading rolling stock – but there will be no new trains on the Alton line, despite a 2.5 per cent rise in fares from January 1. The company is placing an order for 150 carriages from Siemens and Angel Trains, that will be used to operate 10-carriage trains on its busy London Waterloo to Windsor services. This will allow a cascade of trains across the network to ultimately deliver significant extra capacity on other key routes into Waterloo. Longer trains will run from Staines through to Bracknell, Ascot and Reading and on a number of mainline services from Basingstoke to London Waterloo. For full story, see this week's Alton Herald.
