ALTON Lions are issuing a challenge to any organisation or individual to propose a project which will help young people, old people, the disabled, the disadvantaged or the community in general.
The challenge was launched last Saturday at The Swan Hotel by Alton Town Mayor Pat Cole and Lion president Derek Port.
Lions will donate several thousand pounds annually, the proposer must be prepared to match the fund and the proposal must, in the opinion of the judges, result in substantial benefit to the community or section of the community. The small panel of judges will be composed of prominent local people.
The challenge is also designed to raise the public and business awareness of Alton Lions, to attract new members and to start a local corporate sponsorship drive.
Full details of the challenge, giving the objectives, the rules, the panel of judges and instruction on how to enter, will appear in nest week's edition.
Alton Lions meet in Alton but are drawn from most of the surrounding villages. They are part of an international group which has clubs in 180 countries, whose main purpose is to provide help to the young, elderly and those who have a need.
The Lion badge was chosen to symbolise strength, courage, activity and integrity. The ideal is to give service to others without regard to politics, religion, race or the personal interests of members. It pays its administration costs out of members' subscriptions, all money raised going to charity.
