Alton failed to break their losing streak on Saturday.

Effingham are a well-drilled and effective unit with a big pack, reminiscent of Alton's eight in recent years.

Alton welcomed back last year's captain Jim Kerr after a spell at Reading, but were still forced to make several changes to the team that narrowly lost to Jersey in their last league match.

Although Alton took the lead through the boot of David Rowledge, following a penalty for offside, it was to be their only score.

The home side took control of the game, aided by some inept tackling by the visitors, and went on to amass 56 points for an emphatic victory.

Not that it was all doom and gloom. Alton had a few passages of play when they looked dangerous and, more than once, were unlucky not to add to their score.

Jonathan Greene, displaced from hooker by the return of Kerr, had a competent game in the unfamiliar position of flanker, as did Gary McDonnell on his call-up from the seconds.

Skipper David Rowledge was awarded the champagne as the Xeretec Man of the Match for his determined tackling and leadership from the front.

Alton: Nasse, Kerr, Wiggins, Waterton, Doel, Greene (Hardman), McDonnell, M Osborne, Gee, Frith, Mills, D Rowledge, Rees (Vatu), Chant, Law.

l There was some good news for Alton over the weekend. The 2nd XV thrashed Fareham Heathens 79–0 with winger Danny Martin scoring six tries.
