Alton's watertight defence again served them well as they ground out three more points in their quest for the Hampshire League championship.
This, unbelievably, was their eighth successive clean sheet and Stockbridge seldom looked like breaching that rock-like defence, shored by by Dave Goss and Nicky Guy.
When Alton last won the league, in the 1989-99 season, it was a 6-1 victory over Stockbridge in the last game that clinched the title.
Stockbridge have improved since then and the very windy conditions on Saturday helped make it a closer contest.
Alton were not impressed when they had an early goal rulled out on a 50-50 offside decision, but the referee seemed to even things up when he chose not to send off Andy Sharratt, the last defender, for hauling down a forward who was clean through.
Darren Bach was hardly troubled in the home goal and Alton dominated play for long periods.
But the wind always made it a lottery and eventually it was only a penalty that separated the sides.
On 70 minutes, Mark Dando was brought down and prolific marksman Jamie Smith made no mistake from the spot.
Clive Ventham, skipper and midfield general, made certain that his side never lost concentration and it was Alton's work-rate that especially pleased manager John Robson.
"They worked so hard and, despite the conditions, played some great stuff and caused Stockbridge endless problems."
Robson added: "To keep eight clean sheets in a row is a superb achievement."
Vosper Thornycroft, who boast the meanest defence in the league, did Alton an enormous favour by holding leaders East Cowes Vics to a 2-2 draw on Tuesday night.
On Wednesday night, as The Herald was going to press, Alton were playing at Aldermaston and a win would put them top of the table.
