THE crumbling state of Alton's roads has come in for fierce criticism this week with members of the Alton Society and Alton Chamber of Commerce and Industry adding weight to local dissatisfaction.

In a strongly worded statement in this month's newsletter, the chamber is urging members to voice their concerns over the "appalling state" of the roads and pavements in Alton.
