Sir, – It was with great sadness that I read the news that Andrew Livesey has decided to stand down at the next elections.

Andrew is a diligent, intelligent councillor and the Town Council can ill-afford to lose such a person. His contributions to debate are always interesting and thoughtful and his quirky humour has often eased moments of tension. He will be sorely missed.

The moderate majority of the council deplores the actions of the aggressive minority but I fear that there will be fewer and fewer people willing to fight against the relentless pressure and, like Councillor Livesey, will prefer to not to stand for re-election.

I wrote to the Monitoring Officer at Waverley, in support of Councillor Willy Marshall, at the time of his resignation, expressing my sorrow at the loss of a long-serving and honest councillor and deploring the behaviour of certain councillors. I fear for the future of the Town Council, if this lack of respect for fellow members continues to dominate proceedings.
