MORE than 80 primary school students enjoyed the annual orchestra day hosted by Woolmer Hill School, in Haslemere. County councillor Nikki Barton, who helped fund the event, was special guest at the evening ‘Last Night of the Proms’ concert, following a full day of musical workshops and rehearsals.

Organised by Woolmer Hill’s head of music Matthew Nash, it was the 15th event to be staged by the school. It is supported by the South West Surrey Arts team, one of whose members, Mark Cardy, conducted the orchestra whose ages ranged from eight up to 16 years.

The concert also included performances by pupils who were finalists in Woolmer Hill’s Young Musician of the Year competition.

Ishani Bhoola, the evening’s adjudicator was very impressed by the standard of all the musicians.

The night concluded with a rousing performance of ‘Rule Britannia’ by the combined orchestra and two vocalists. Headteacher Clare Talbot said, “All the performances were outstanding and the orchestra, made up by pupils of such diverse ages, came together on the night to give a rousing concert.”
