HASLEMERE town councillors have given the thumbs up to the latest £30,000 skateboarding scheme for youngsters in the town.

The revised plan for the skateboard park, at The Herons Leisure Centre, is to cost an additional £5,000 of matched funding on top of the original contribution of £20,000 each from Haslemere Town Council and Waverley.

But town mayor Fay Foster told last week's meeting of its finance and general purposes committee: "We mustn't delay any more."

The go-ahead for the skateboard park follows a public consultation by Waverley Borough Council over the preferred site for the facility.

Haslemere Town Council, which had already budgeted for £10,000 for the scheme, pledged another £3,000 to enable The Herons' scheme to proceed.

Now an extra £2,000 is required by Waverley before a planning application is made to provide more fencing and landscaping to the area.

Town councillor Ted Orchard told the meeting that he had received an anonymous offer of £2,000 to meet the shortfall.
