WARNING signs on the A325 are to be improved by Surrey County Council after another HGV accident at the notorious Wrecclesham railway bridge caused traffic chaos early on Monday morning.
A spokesperson for the county council said the current signs, which advise high-sided vehicles to use Echo Barn Lane as an alternative route, are to be enhanced to warn of the mandatory signs already in place on the bridge safety beams.
These signs set a height limit of 13 feet 9 inches for lorries.
The latest accident happened at 4-50 am, when a truck on its way to Peterborough from Southampton slid into the bridge.
It follows a number of similar accidents and a fatality at the site, arising largely from heavy goods vehicles using the route to link up with the M3.
The A325 remained closed until 9-15 am, creating gridlock. The driver of the lorry, from W. Carters haulage in Suffolk, was taken to Royal Surrey County Hospital suffering from cuts, bruises and suspected broken ribs.
In spite of the accident rate, Graham Hodgson, Surrey County Council engineer, said the road was indeed Òsuitable for goods vehiclesÓ and was designated as being so.
ÒRegrettably there have been a few incidents of strikes on the bridge and these are of concern, and will be reflected in the Wrecclesham Traffic Corridor Study,Ó he said.
Mr Hodgson explained that delays in obtaining an electronic warning device for the bridge were due to the Òunusual and rare equipmentÓ being installed.
