The late postponement of the match at Hitchin Town on Tuesday was just about the last straw for Aldershot Town who have made a series of fruitless trips during this rain-disrupted season.

It was their second pointless journey to the Hertfordshire club in a matter of weeks and manager George Borg blew his top after referee Kevin Merchant had taken one look at the pitch and called the game off at 6-30 pm.

Not that Borg disagreed with the verdict. "Of course the pitch was unplayable, but the game should have been called off at lunchtime when a local referee examined it."

What Borg said about that local referee does not bear repeating in print, but his anger was justified. He himself spent five hours on the round trip, while, for Aldershot's players, officials and fans, it was another complete waste of an evening.

"It's an absolute disgrace," continued Borg. "Stuart Cash (his assistant) saw the pitch on Monday and said it was doubtful then. You only had to see the mess and mud on it to know the game was never going to be played.

"It's costing the club and fans a lot of money and it's time the league took a grip. I've seen and run better Sunday sides than some of the clubs."

The manager suspects that, in doubtful weather, some of the clubs hold out as long as possible because they anticipate making money out of the larger crowds that Aldershot bring.

So it's another game to be re-arranged for Aldershot who, after their planned home game with Chesham this Saturday, make the return trip to the Bucks club in a re-scheduled fixture on Tuesday.

Wayne Andrews has played his last game for Aldershot. The gifted, but temperamental striker was fined two weeks' wages for turning up late for the Croydon game last month. A row followed on the training ground, after which Andrews was suspended and his contract cancelled. However, Aldershot will want a signing-on fee from any interested clubs.

On a brighter note, Borg has completed the signing of Ryan Kirby from Stevenage.
