CHAOS prevailed in Farnham town centre on Tuesday when students from the Surrey Institute of Art & Design protested protest against war on Iraq.

A 40-strong group, waving anti- war placards and doused in red paint, set up a demonstration in West Street, which lasted for around three hours.

On one of the warmest days of the year, the event attracted a large crowd of onlookers who stood three deep on the pavements watching the developments.

Protestors moved into the road blocking the path of traffic and urging motorists to beep their horns in support of their cause.

Greg Hall, one of the protesters, explained: "This is about people coming together in non-violent direct action and is part of a week- long series of events we have been taking part in.

"Yesterday we held a "die in" outside the Houses of Parliament in which we all laid down covered in red paint to symbolise blood.

"I am protesting against the gross hypocrisy of this government. Bush and Blair should be focusing their energies on peace in the Middle East and on Saudia Arabia and Palestine, where the problems stem from."

Although this was largely a peaceful protest, there were minor altercations between protesters and some motorists. Police arrived and maintained a presence throughout the protest to keep protesters out of the road and prevent any obstruction.

A police spokesperson said: "We were concerned that people may have been run over, so we stayed until the demonstration finished at around 6 pm. Overall this was very peaceful protest, there was no public order issue and no arrests."

However not everyone agreed with their sentiments One pro-war onlooker who did not wish to be named commented: "Thank God the war would be about defending the liberty that these people are exercising by protesting. It is a result of our determination to protect our democracy which is under threat from a tyrant in Iraq."

Last November a similar protest protest was organised in the same location.
