Witnesses are being sought after five fly-tipping incidents were reported in Tilford in the space of two hours.

Five separate incidents were reported at two locations between 9pm and 11pm on Thursday, June 11. Three deposits were made on Smugglers Path, off Crookbury Road, while a further two occurred on the bridleway between Waverley Lane and Sheephatch Lane.

Officers for Waverley Borough Council said large quantities of roofing waste were illegally dumped at both sites, including roof tiles, roofing felt and timber battens.

Cllr Tony Fairclough, portfolio holder for enforcement and regulatory services, said: "Fly-tipping is a selfish and unlawful act that damages our environment and local communities. We take these incidents extremely seriously and will not hesitate to pursue enforcement action against those responsible.

"We urge anyone who saw anything suspicious on the evening in question to come forward. Even small details could make a significant difference to our investigation."

The council is urging anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area, or who has relevant CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage, to come forward to assist the investigation.

Waverley operates a zero-tolerance approach to fly-tipping and prosecutes every case where possible. Fixed penalty notices of up to £400 can be issued, while court proceedings can result in fines of up to £50,000, unlimited fines in the Crown Court, or a custodial sentence.

The council said the incidents caused serious harm to the countryside, posed risks to wildlife and placed an unnecessary burden on local communities and public resources.

Fly-tipping remains a significant issue across Waverley's rural routes and country lanes. The council is tackling illegal dumping by seizing vehicles, installing covert cameras and appealing for witness footage.

Anyone with information can report it via the council's website at waverley.gov.uk/report-fly-tipping or by calling 01483 523524.
