AN appeal has gone out for a thief who stole a potentially life-saving public access defibrillator housed in a decommissioned phone box to do the decent thing and return it. The equipment, costing around £2,000, disappeared from the red box in The Street at Dockenfield between Wednesday and Friday last week. Community first responder Neil Baker said he discovered the theft when he went to collect the defibrillator to change its battery, after the parish councillor who keeps an eye on it reported power was running low. The equipment was installed in June 2013 and had not yet been used in an emergency, although Neil, who has provided the first response at very many cardiac arrests in the rural area, knows it could make the difference between life and death.
