PEOPLE of all ages tried their hand at archery at the weekend, when Whitehill Archers welcomed newcomers to its open day. Since the London 2012 Olympics, interest across the country in this formerly niche sport has grown dramatically, with the Whitehill Archers group seeing a "significant increase in membership" in recent years - a large percentage of whom are juniors. To further boost membership, Saturday saw the club partake in Archery GB's Big Weekend, when people were invited to try the sport for free. Whitehill Archers (formerly Standford Archers) has been established since 1980 when it was located at Standford Grange. In May 2011 it relocated to its current field which can be found at Whitehill Sports Club just off the A325. The club shoot a variety of bow types, including recurve and compound bows - which people will have seen in the Olympics - and barebow and the traditional longbow. Although members predominately shoot on Saturday mornings, their field is available to members anytime of the week during daylight hours.
