RESIDENTS from Long Sutton and children from Long Sutton primary school came together with pupils and staff at Lord Wandsworth College to commemorate Armistice Day, marking the end of the First World War.
Some 750 people gathered around the flagpole at 11am to remember those who had fallen. The Guard of Honour from Lord Wandsworth’s Combined Cadet Force marched onto the parade, followed by the headmaster, governors, heads of vollege, pupils from Long Sutton Primary School and residents of the village.
LWC chaplain Pete Maidment led the service. sixth former Ben Baily played The Last Post on the bugle to signal the one-minute’s silence, followed by the Reveille. Heads of college Charlie Morrell-Brown and Dani Baker read out the names of those from Long Sutton who died in WWI. Wreaths were laid, along with crosses from each boarding house, at the foot of the flagpole.
It was a special moment for the Long Sutton community to gather together, stop and remember.
Headmaster Adam Williams said, “It was very moving to see our whole community come together as one to pay our respects to those who lost their lives in the Great War. As those aged between four and 84 gathered on the hill that overlooks the village and beyond, there was a palpable pause and sense of reflection.”
